The Beginning of My IT Journey
Walking into my first Introduction to Computing class at CCDI, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought IT was just about fixing computers and maybe building websites. How naive I was!
My First "Hello World" Moment
In Computer Programming 1, we started with the classic "Hello World" program. It seems so simple now, but back then, seeing those words appear on the screen felt like magic. I remember thinking, "I just made the computer do something!"
💡 First Lesson Learned
Programming isn't about memorizing syntax—it's about logical thinking and problem-solving.
What I Thought IT Was vs. Reality
What I thought: IT = fixing computers + basic websites
Reality: IT encompasses software development, database management, network systems, cybersecurity, and so much more!
Early Challenges
- Syntax Errors: Spent hours debugging missing semicolons
- Logic Problems: Understanding loops and conditions
- Math Integration: Connecting mathematical concepts to programming
Foundation Courses That Shaped My Understanding
Purposive Communication
Little did I know how crucial communication would be in IT. Clear documentation and explaining technical concepts became essential skills.
Mathematics in the Modern World
The logical thinking from math directly translated to programming logic. Every algorithm is essentially a mathematical solution.
IT Software Solutions for Business
This opened my eyes to how technology solves real business problems. IT isn't just about code—it's about creating solutions that matter.
"The best part about starting in IT? Every day brings something new to learn, and every problem has a solution waiting to be discovered."
What I Wish I Knew Then
- Google is your friend: Even professionals look things up constantly
- Practice daily: Small, consistent efforts beat cramming
- Ask questions: No question is too basic when you're learning
- Join communities: Learning with others makes the journey enjoyable
Looking Forward
As I write this in 2021, I'm excited about the journey ahead. I know there will be challenges, late nights debugging code, and moments of frustration. But I also know there will be incredible breakthroughs, "aha!" moments, and the satisfaction of building something that works.
To anyone just starting their IT journey: embrace the confusion, celebrate small wins, and remember that every expert was once a beginner.
